The book tells the exciting stories of the people and places that formed the town, such as the early workers, businessmen, preachers, and teachers.

About this book
Originally part of Springfield's outward commons, Hampden was called Wilbraham and then South Wilbraham until it was incorporated as Hampden in 1878. Its main street parallels the peaceful Scantic River, surrounded by mountains that lend a sense of mystery to this lovely New England village. By harnessing the Scantic's energy, this farming community became a booming mill town in the 1800s. When plans to build a railroad for transporting products from mills and quarries failed, industry collapsed. The town reverted back to farming and later became a bedroom community.Hampden brings readers back to the days when world-renowned Thornton W. Burgess wrote his Peter Rabbit books beside Laughing Brook and when Maude Tait, pioneer aviatrix whose speed record beat Amelia Earhart's, taught school in Hampden. The book tells the exciting stories of the people and places that formed the town, such as the early workers, businessmen, preachers, and teachers. Included in Hampden are early photographs of parades and plays, picnics and personalities, and the way of life before the advent of modern transportation, communication, and manner of business.

0 5/5 dagtagg (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sperry Top-Sider Men's Hampden Venetian Slip-On Loafer (Shoes) These were a gift for my husband. His favorite slip-ons needed replacement badly, and I was looking for something that would look professional but also be very comfortable since he has to walk and deal with clients for most of the day. It's been two days, and I have received about ten random texts from him thanking me for the shoes. He says they are incredibly comfortable, even more so than the pair they were meant to replace, so brownie points to me! Plus, they have a great, versatile look, which we both love. They seem soundly made, and I expect him to get a lot of use out of them. I'm considering getting him an extra pair in a different color, he has raved about them that much! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 23, 2015

    Great Shoes

0 5/5 Jamiebeth - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Sperry Top-Sider Men's Hampden Venetian Slip-On Loafer (Shoes) These shoes have no arch support, but none is needed either. My husband had the Merrell Rally Moc shoes and absolutely loved them, but they were discontinued in black and he really wanted black shoes. These are very similar and just as comfortable. You can easily flex the sole and these are very light weight. In running shoes, the new thing is to have shoes that have a 0 millimeter difference between the heal and toe height and these are the dress shoes version of that. They are as close as you can come in dress shoes to wearing no shoes at all. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2015

A brilliant condensation of various theories of the mind.

0 5/5 BBlair (Washington State) - See all my reviews This review is from: Maps of the Mind: Charts and Concepts of the Mind and its Labyrinths (Paperback) Maps of the Mind is an excellent review volume that integrates and condenses many different perspectives concerning the nature of the human mind. Using the metaphor of a map, the author organizes the work of several prestigious authors and theorists into 9 different levels, from the mechanistic and physiological to the paradigmatic and mythological. Probing, entertaining, and thought provoking, Maps of the Mind will provide you with a sophisticated and breathtaking vista on the intricacies of the human psyche. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 28, 1998

    A Great Mind at Work

This book is the best example of a fine mind at work that I know of. Although I first read it in the 1980s, it still is current and continues to convey complex and timeless knowledge about the mind in an understandable, non-polemic, yet in an eclectic and fresh way.The volume is dense but segmented into bite-sized frames with diagrams and pictures that intentionally take the content out into the third dimension and makes it less formidable. And although it is segmented into bite-sized frames, the reader's appetite for learning about the concepts of psychology -- from Gregory Bateson, Freud, Rollo May to Ernest Becker and Otto Rank -- will be more than satisfied. The leitmotif of the volume is the idea of connectedness. There are three messages: Humanity is about wholeness; survival of the planet is about wholeness; and living a rich and full life is about self-knowledge and wholeness. It covers the waterfront of what we knew about human psychology... 5/5 Herbert L Calhoun (Falls Church, VA USA) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2005
