Hampden

Creator: Evelyn Griggs Schoolcraft | History - 2002

The book tells the exciting stories of the people and places that formed the town, such as the early workers, businessmen, preachers, and teachers.

Publisher: Arcadia Publishing

About this book
Originally part of Springfield's outward commons, Hampden was called Wilbraham and then South Wilbraham until it was incorporated as Hampden in 1878. Its main street parallels the peaceful Scantic River, surrounded by mountains that lend a sense of mystery to this lovely New England village. By harnessing the Scantic's energy, this farming community became a booming mill town in the 1800s. When plans to build a railroad for transporting products from mills and quarries failed, industry collapsed. The town reverted back to farming and later became a bedroom community.Hampden brings readers back to the days when world-renowned Thornton W. Burgess wrote his Peter Rabbit books beside Laughing Brook and when Maude Tait, pioneer aviatrix whose speed record beat Amelia Earhart's, taught school in Hampden. The book tells the exciting stories of the people and places that formed the town, such as the early workers, businessmen, preachers, and teachers. Included in Hampden are early photographs of parades and plays, picnics and personalities, and the way of life before the advent of modern transportation, communication, and manner of business.

Holy freaking crap! I am an audiophile for 30 yrs

I have never left a review for anything in my life, but feel compelled to do so with this product. Holy freaking crap! I am an audiophile for 30 yrs. This speaker system for a computer desk from Polk is WORTH it. I have dealt with computer speakers for so many years -- always listening and knowing that something better could be done. I even had a 5.1 surround sound system set up for my computer in my youth, but have finally gone to a 2.0 set-up after creating a nice home office. Still, even with Bose $100 to $200 range, I was left always feeling wanting. I looked at maybe 50 different reviews on these. There were a few who didn't like (always are), but the absolute majority seemed to like these. I took the chance on a $400 set of speakers. I have struggled with the idea that the high end computer speakers require a USB hook up, bypassing my expensive sound card. These speakers provide the option for THREE simultaneous connections -- USB, sound card (direct from back... 5/5 jeffrey olesen - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Mixed bag. $$$

EDIT: I'll leave my original review below, but my impression has changed considerably. I haven't been listening to these speakers very much the past winter because I really grew to dislike the sound. That said, I just bought a new desk for my office upstairs. This desk is considerably sturdier and more solid than the previous 2 desks I had tested the speakers on. I moved the Hampdens to the new desk and boy what a difference. The downward firing bass port really needs a rock solid surface to not muddle the sound. Everything sounds better now. Everything, they have a smooth and warm low end with crisp highs. The bass is still a bit beefed up and bleeds into the midrange a bit though. Overall very nice sound for near field listening, and these things will really put out some volume if needed. Make sure you have a solid surface to put these on!Original review: I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. I've owned them for a few weeks now, and still have mixed feelings about... 4/5 AlexCT (CT) - See all my reviews This review is from: Polk Audio Hampden AM6510-A Bluetooth Speaker System with aptX Audio Streaming (Electronics) EDIT: I'll leave my original review below, but my impression has changed considerably. Incredible!!!

HAMPDENRemember the days when computer speakers were those crappy, beige-colored pieces of plastic that sounded like a mix between a cup-and-string kid’s phone and a person singing underwater? Boy, have we come a long way since!I have known and loved Polk products for quite some time, but when I bought a pair of these puppies a couple of weeks ago I was expecting very good quality speakers for a great price, not THE BEST DESKTOP speakers I have ever heard. Yes, admittedly a bold statement. But one I don’t hesitate in making after spending some time listening to these and being blown-away by how rich, warm, deep (as in crazy-good, distortion-free lows) and clean everything sounds through these. I have never heard any system that offer this much bass without a paired sub-woofer.I ditched a pair of Bowers & Wilkins MM-1s ($100 more expensive) for these and I am never looking back. Don’t get me wrong, the MM-1s are solid desktop... 5/5 M. Alencar (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews, July 22, 2014

    Great Shoes

5/5 Jamiebeth - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Sperry Top-Sider Men's Hampden Venetian Slip-On Loafer (Shoes) These shoes have no arch support, but none is needed either. My husband had the Merrell Rally Moc shoes and absolutely loved them, but they were discontinued in black and he really wanted black shoes. These are very similar and just as comfortable. You can easily flex the sole and these are very light weight. In running shoes, the new thing is to have shoes that have a 0 millimeter difference between the heal and toe height and these are the dress shoes version of that. They are as close as you can come in dress shoes to wearing no shoes at all. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 29, 2015
