Napoleon's Swiss Troops

Creator: David Greentree, David Campbell | History - 2012-03-20

The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

Publisher: Osprey Publishing

About this book
Ever since the 15th century Switzerland had been exporting professional soldiers to serve as mercenaries for foreign monarchies. Napoleon, therefore, was not the first to make full use of the martial qualities of the Swiss and obtained Swiss agreement to expand the recruitment of regiments for service in the French Army. Napoleon would use Swiss troops on the battlefields of Italy and Spain, and in 1812 re-organize the four original regiments into a single division for the invasion of Russia, with each regiment having three full-strength battalions. In all theatres where they were engaged, Swiss contingents would often be relied upon to act as rearguards so other forces caught in a tight situation could escape. Time and again they would be asked to save the day for the French soldiers with whom they fought, in Italy and Spain and most famously for Napoleon himself, in Russia. In November of 1812, meeting up with Napoleon's main force retreating from Moscow at the Berezina River, the Swiss on the west bank guarded the approaches to the pontoon bridges from the Russian attack to the south. 1,200 Swiss, out of approximately 8,000 that entered Russia, were left to face, along with 8,000 men from other units, the 30,000-strong Russian army. The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

Comparison of My Favorite Swiss Army Knives (SAKs)

I have bought and used several versions of the Swiss Army knives. There are plenty of reviews that cover the pros and cons of specific versions of the Swiss Army knives (SAK), so I thought what I would do in my review is cover some of the things I like (or don't like) about the different versions in case anyone is like me and trying decide WHICH SAK they want to by. I did a lot of research before I bought any of the versions and then, of course, personally tried out different versions. So, I thought I would share my experience and what I like and don't like.Naturally, when it comes to which SAK to buy, there are fundamental choices to be made about what size of SAK you want as well as what functionality. Obviously, that can be personal preference. So, while I'm not going to list the features of each type of SAK, I'll talk about why I like particular knives (or don't) comparing their feature based on my preferences. I think I'm probably fairly "typical", but if you... 5/5 Patrick - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Knife... I'm buying another.

5/5 BigE (Kentucky) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Pocket Knife (Sports) I just ordered this knife for my son. He is 9 and will love this knife. I am 39 and he may not get this one because I love it too. I really like the feel of this knife with the new ( to me anyway) handle material. I lie the texture and the feel of quality in my hand. I got this knife for 20.00 here on Amazon and will most likely be getting one for myself. I purchased a Bantam for myself, but I may have to have one of these as well. I'm inpressed. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , November 24, 2014

    Excellence with red grip slabs.

This is one of my favorite knives of all time. For someone who spends a lot of time outside in the woods, it's an ideal hiking/camping companion. The wood saw alone is well worth the price listed, as it comes out of the box sharper than most quality handsaws, which makes it ideal for cutting small firewood. Steel quality is good, meaning it's going to hold a good edge for long time and be easy to sharpen (Very little work made mine wood carving sharp. Out of the box it's plenty sharp for 99% of applications, woodcarving just calls for another level.) The knife is slightly bulky, but considering the features, it's actually thinner than I expected. It's a four layer SAK style knife; it's going to be thick enough for four 3/32" slots! One of the ideal design pros is that the grips are not slick like older style SAK grips. This grip is textured, meaning the knife will still be serviceable even when the weather craps out. The textured grips however aren't so grippy that they... 5/5 Kindle Customer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Perfect Front-Pocket Wallet for Me

I bought the Swiss Bags Genuine Leather Money Clip and the Kenneth Cole Reaction Men's Money Clip With Id Window from Amazon. I will compare the two.Swiss Bags Pros:* Size - The Swiss Bags wallet is smaller than the Kenneth Cole. It isn't as long as the Kenneth Cole. It's also thinner. The magnet is thin, thinner than the magnet on my old Fossil front-pocket wallet. The clip on the Kenneth Cole is pretty thick, especially the bottom part that sticks out significantly.* Money clip - The clip on the Swiss Bags wallet is easier to use. The Kenneth Cole clip is very tight, making it hard to get bills into it.* Storage - The Swiss Bags wallet has credit card holders while the Kenneth Cole does not.* ID window - The Swiss Bags wallet has a hole in the ID window, making it easy to remove your ID. The Kenneth Cole wallet doesn't.Kenneth Cole Pros:* Aesthetics - The Kenneth Cole wallet looks slightly better. Detail Review

Edit after a year: My earlier review is below. After a year of use, wallet is as it was the first day. It's nice and shiny. Logo is as it was the first day. Sewing is as it was the first day. Pockets didn't get much bigger, they are still secure. If I would go for another color, I would go with the gray one maybe for the summer. I wont lie, I'm bored of it after a year but can't find anything much better, it still looks elegant. Overall, after a year it's as strong as it was the first day. It's a strong compact wallet which could last a lifetime.Something to add: I've read in an earlier review with a picture about 'money holder' (the clip) not being stitched, instead that it was holding with a glue. I can confirm that it is actually stitched strongly and after a year of use, mine is as strong as the first day.Earlier review:Color:I extremely recommend dark brown color. Great idea, but not good craftsmanship.

1/5 Cyrus - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Alpine Swiss Mens Wallet Leather Money Clip Thin Slim Front Pocket Wallet (Apparel) I was very excited when this wallet popped up on sale. I had been looking for a front pocket wallet for some time now.The description states 3 card slots, 1 ID window and some cash, which it has. The 3 cards and 1/2 IDs in the window fit really snugly. To the point of almost being difficult to remove, but this may just be due to the material being taut. The craftsmanship on this wallet is really poor. I have had this wallet for 3 days now and it is already falling apart. You can see from the pictures that the stitching is coming apart. The magnets are not too strong either. You can keep a dozen bills folded, but any more than that and you lose much of its 'holding' power.Alpine puts out a good quality product normally, so I'm hoping I just got a defect. Unfortunately, I will be looking elsewhere., April 18, 2017

    Incredibly handy, especially for fishermen.

These are incredibly handy pocket knives, especially for fishermen. Let me get straight to the point:Pros:- Sharp scissors and knife! I use the scissors to cut fishing line (I typically use up to 20 lb test braid and up to 40 lb test mono leader) and the blade to open packages. As usual, remember to close it when you're done with it.- Contrary to the picture shown, the nail filer end is actually flat. That's right, it doubles as a flathead! It has saved me many times when I needed a small flathead screwdriver and didn't have one laying around.- Lightweight! Since there's a keychain loop, I keep this on a neck lanyard and it doesn't bother me one bit.- The tweezers are tiny and useful for picking up small screws (I use them for reassembling my fishing reels).- The plastic pick is useful for various things, such as trying to get sand out of the crevices of something that you wouldn't take the knife to instead.- If properly maintained,... 5/5 noc - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) More useful than you think

5/5 John - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife (Sports) I bought this as a replacement for one I lost at a security checkpoint (forgot to go back and claim it). I had the other one for a couple years and it was still working perfectly. You will not regret your decision to have one of these on your keyring. I find that I use it all the time.KNIFE: Opening packages, cutting, etc. It goes dull, but that is probably a good thing. Its a dangerous little thing when sharp since it does not lock open. I have cut myself a few times due to having fat fingers, or abusing it for tasks that should require a much larger blade.FLATHEAD SCREWDRIVE/FILE: I've used the "screwdriver" part on screws that I shouldn't have, and it never bent or broke. The file is useful for chipped/broken fingernails.SCISSORS: Probably the most used of the three. Its small, but I keep finding uses for it. Especially useful for strings on clothing. Its cheap. Its tough. It gets used more than you would think. Buy it! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 18, 2016

    One of my favourite knives...

5/5 Kanchan J (Kane, PA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife (Sports) My initial review was that the Swiss army knife was too small for my liking. But after using it for a few months, I feel like that is my most favourite thing about the knife. It is so compact and hides in my knife pocket in my pant. If only TSA would allow this on planes, I would have it in my key ring and with me all the time. I have used all but function of the knife. Out of all the features, I think the scissors would be irreplaceable one for me, it comes in handy Just this week, I tightened a screw which no one had the tool to do. I am not so much of a file user and couldn't care less for it.I would highly recommend this to any one looking for a small pocket knife..., December 8, 2015
