Napoleon's Swiss Troops

Creator: David Greentree, David Campbell | History - 2012-03-20

The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

Publisher: Osprey Publishing

About this book
Ever since the 15th century Switzerland had been exporting professional soldiers to serve as mercenaries for foreign monarchies. Napoleon, therefore, was not the first to make full use of the martial qualities of the Swiss and obtained Swiss agreement to expand the recruitment of regiments for service in the French Army. Napoleon would use Swiss troops on the battlefields of Italy and Spain, and in 1812 re-organize the four original regiments into a single division for the invasion of Russia, with each regiment having three full-strength battalions. In all theatres where they were engaged, Swiss contingents would often be relied upon to act as rearguards so other forces caught in a tight situation could escape. Time and again they would be asked to save the day for the French soldiers with whom they fought, in Italy and Spain and most famously for Napoleon himself, in Russia. In November of 1812, meeting up with Napoleon's main force retreating from Moscow at the Berezina River, the Swiss on the west bank guarded the approaches to the pontoon bridges from the Russian attack to the south. 1,200 Swiss, out of approximately 8,000 that entered Russia, were left to face, along with 8,000 men from other units, the 30,000-strong Russian army. The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

Funny at times, but thought provoking

4/5 Mike C. - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Swiss Army Man (Amazon Video) Swiss Army Man isn't for everyone. On the surface this movie isn't much more than two guys doing pretty random things in the forest with low brow humor thrown in. However, if anyone wants to watch this film, I urge you pay close attention to their conversations regarding things we as a society deem normal and what are things we see as weird. In my opinion, there's symbolism and a lot of metaphors in here that can be applied to our own lives. If you do watch it, crafting your own big picture and meaning is what's going to give you the most entertainment. As said before, this film is humorous at times, but if you want a comedy or something you can just sit and watch without much thought, you may not like this movie. Bizarre but thoughtful and beautifully portrayed.

I never thought in a million years I'd give five stars to a movie with this many fart references...but here I am. Seriously, I was unsure through the first few minutes, but I held on, and I'm so glad that I did. This movie is weird, but beautiful. Bizarre and thought-provoking. As a medical professional, I deal with people who are on their way out all the time, and truly, the aging and decomposition of a body is a strange and powerful thing, and this movie touches on that, but so much more. The references to what is real and what is important, what is valuable and what is merely a passing thing, and how the power of knowing that we are NOT alone is enough to bring about miracles.I've never seen Paul Dano before, but his acting is superb, and Daniel Radcliff is *singularly* amazing in this movie. I can't think of many actors who could portray a dead body this convincingly, much less the emotional and spiritual evolution the character experiences through the film.I... 5/5 Rachel Blalock - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I'm really glad I gave it a chance

This movie is unique and deeply layered. It is certainly not for everyone...I personally almost turned it off within 10 minutes, but there was a certain intrigue and curiosity that kept me going. I'm really glad I gave it a chance. It's weird, emotional, original, morbidly comical, and a beautiful spectacle. It manages to be satirical and genuine while also turning some overused tropes on its head. Definitely watch the trailer first so you have at least an understanding of the tone, style, and plot of the movie; the trailer is an accurate depiction of these elements, though there's so much more to the plot than what is put forth there. The soundtrack is actually amazing, too! The actors are super talented and carry the weight of the movie effortlessly. It's one of those movies that you want to watch multiple times, and has an ending that can be interpreted differently by different people. I didn't think I liked the movie until the very end, and now I think it's one of my favorite... 4/5 A. Baker - See all my reviews, February 5, 2017

    Perfect!

5/5 Lucky Day - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Victorinox Swiss Army Fieldmaster Pocket Knife (Sports) Everything I need for lighter home use, camping, hiking, glove box, etc. (Too big to be my EDC, I prefer the Super Tinker for that). I have both the Fieldmaster and the Huntsman, and the only difference is the phillips screwdriver vs the corkscrew. You cannot go wrong with a true Swiss Army knife as long as you pick a model that suits your needs.TIPS:-There's a tiny hole under the phillips opening to add your own straight pin.-The hook is useful for pulling tent loops and stakes, hooking things through loops.-Reamer is great for punching belt loops, creating holes, getting out shoelace knots.-Be very careful with the saw - it is the sharpest tool I've ever seen! Useful for cutting twigs for marshmellow/hotdog cooking sticks, cutting cardboard.Highly recommended! Comparison of My Favorite Swiss Army Knives

I have bought and used several versions of the Swiss Army knives. There are plenty of reviews that cover the pros and cons of specific versions of the Swiss Army knives (SAK), so I thought what I would do in my review is cover some of the things I like (or don't like) about the different versions in case anyone is like me and trying decide WHICH SAK they want to by. I did a lot of research before I bought any of the versions and then, of course, personally tried out different versions. So, I thought I would share my experience and what I like and don't like.Naturally, when it comes to which SAK to buy, there are fundamental choices to be made about what size of SAK you want as well as what functionality. Obviously, that can be personal preference. So, while I'm not going to list the features of each type of SAK, I'll talk about why I like particular knives (or don't) comparing their feature based on my preferences. I think I'm probably fairly "typical", but if you... 5/5 Patrick - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Still a quality tool

I had one as a kid, given to me by my grandfather and I loved it! Unfortunately over the years probably as a teenager or through some moves I lost it.My son is 12 and I wanted him to have his first pocketknife and what better than a Swiss Army knife similar to the one I had.So many things seem to have gotten cheaper as far as quality when I see what my son has compared to me, I sound like an old man "When I was a kid xyz wouldn't break like that" Ugh, but it's true, NOT THIS THOUGH!It has not gotten a lot of use yet but the use is has gotten it still feels solid, well built and I have no concerns at this point that this will fall apart or break like many other things these kids have these days.I really feel like this is something he will be able to hold on to, use and have sentimental value about. (And hopefully not lose like I did)I was concerned about some of the tools not locking, then remembered mine never did either... 5/5 ktackel (Matthews, NC) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Nice little EDC item

I bought this as a redundancy item in my every day carry gear. I am pleased with it.Pros:• Packaging is nice. Instead of just listing every tool, the tools are diagrammed on the package. You don’t have to hunt and peck for the tools. Also, the item is nicely secured in the packaging.• The size and weight of the item allows you to put it on your keyring or necklace and not add much bulk or weight. The item weighs .5 oz.• The serrated and straight blades were both very sharp. Serrated edge cuts through thick cardboard boxes, straight blade cuts paper. No idea how long the blade will hold the edge.• A sturdy little tool, no bending or flexing when in use.Cons:• This item is very hard for me to open. I struggled with it the first time. It gets easier with use, but is still difficult and requires both hands.• Because the item takes two hands to open, you might drop... 5/5 Blogger Christine - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) I received two defective units, possibly counterfeit.

First, let me state that I've had three of these tools in the the past (same model), and they've all been great. However, I purchased a two pack from this Amazon listing (seller was DawningView), and the quality of the tools was atrocious!I could tell before opening the blister package that something wasn't right. They looked...different.I opened a package and found that the tool was indeed of low quality.-The blade was dull (both the straight and serrated part)-When locking the tool closed, it was loose, and would wiggle freely. This could cause the tip of the blade to cut my pant pocket (or even me).-The metal itself was uneven! Just look at my photo, the metal that makes up the screwdriver is not straight. It's even worse on the tool that I didn't open yet. You can see that just under the serrated blade, the metal is sort of 'wavey'. It looks even worse in person. The three utilikeys I had over the past 5 years have had none of... 1/5 Thad - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This thing has saved my bacon more times than I can count

This little thing is great! At first, I thought, "I probably won't use this that much, I can get it for like 6 bucks so why not"...well I couldn't have been more wrong. I use this thing ALL the time.I was amazed at how incredibly sharp the blades are, they aren't messing around. The size of the utilikey really fits nicely on my key chain, it doesn't stand out anymore than any other keys do, which was an initial concern I had.The screwdrivers are great in a pinch, obviously not something you'd want to use to do a project with, but when you need something right then and there to take a screw out or tighten on your glasses, this thing couldn't be more convenient. It's actually sort of a pain to open, HOWEVER that is a GOOD THING. I have zero fear of this falling off my key chain ring, as you need to be very intentional when opening it. So I'm glad it's as sturdy as it is.All in all, for the price, it is totally worth it,... 5/5 CGriesemer - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not worth the price and has a funny after taste!

Here is my opinion of the swiss miss hot cocoa for k-cups. I'm not a fan and I think they are overpriced for the quality of hot cocoa that you end up with in your cup. I purchased these to try because we have a new k-cup brewer and the weather is getting colder so I figured it would be nice to get a quick cup of hot cocoa to warm you up. To start, you should use the smallest brew size or half of the cycle is just hot water pouring through making a very weak cocoa. Also, I think it has a funny aftertaste that lingers in your mouth way after you have finished drinking it. I know they use some artificial sweeteners to make it with less sugars and calories but it distracts from the taste. I want a sweet, cocoa, creamy drink - not a funny tasting brown cup of hot water. If you want an instant cocoa just use your machine to make the hot water and buy the regular packets and mix it up. Better yet - just buy cocoa, get some sugar and use hot milk... yeah, more time consuming but... 2/5 David Allen (Tampa Bay, FL) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good Hot Cocoa

This is a good and fast hot chocolate product offering that my whole family enjoys, and actually prefer it over the 4-5 different Keurig-enabled hot chocolates I’ve purchased here on Amazon; this larger unit count per box is more economical on a per-cup basis. While I don't drink that much hot chocolate, my family does and they like the quick and easy way they can make a cup vs. warming up water in the microwave, stirring, etc. I think it tastes a little better than the Butternut and Nestle brands - throw in a few marshmellows and you are set! Here are the things to look out for when brewing hot chocolate with your Keurig that works for us:1. Make sure you shake the cocoa container real well prior to putting the pod in the Keurig: the powder / mix tends to clump, and you don't want that to be the case when you brew a cup or else it will taste a little watery, and you run the risk of clumping while brewing which will make the water overflow out the top of... 4/5 Michael Gallagher (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews, January 12, 2015

Ah, yes. Winter's icy grip has once again enveloped the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. What is one to do, when it is nearly impossible to thaw frozen feet, and defrost icicle fingertips? Drink hot cocoa, of course! And what better hot chocolate to enjoy than Swiss Miss Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa. One cup will transport you to the crackling fires of a Swiss chalet, warming you to the core. Who cares that winter is here and that it will probably last until June. Pfffft.
