Napoleon's Swiss Troops

Creator: David Greentree, David Campbell | History - 2012-03-20

The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

Publisher: Osprey Publishing

About this book
Ever since the 15th century Switzerland had been exporting professional soldiers to serve as mercenaries for foreign monarchies. Napoleon, therefore, was not the first to make full use of the martial qualities of the Swiss and obtained Swiss agreement to expand the recruitment of regiments for service in the French Army. Napoleon would use Swiss troops on the battlefields of Italy and Spain, and in 1812 re-organize the four original regiments into a single division for the invasion of Russia, with each regiment having three full-strength battalions. In all theatres where they were engaged, Swiss contingents would often be relied upon to act as rearguards so other forces caught in a tight situation could escape. Time and again they would be asked to save the day for the French soldiers with whom they fought, in Italy and Spain and most famously for Napoleon himself, in Russia. In November of 1812, meeting up with Napoleon's main force retreating from Moscow at the Berezina River, the Swiss on the west bank guarded the approaches to the pontoon bridges from the Russian attack to the south. 1,200 Swiss, out of approximately 8,000 that entered Russia, were left to face, along with 8,000 men from other units, the 30,000-strong Russian army. The Swiss held their ground and when their ammunition ran out they charged the Russians with bayonets. This book reveals the proud combat history of the Swiss troops of Napoleon's army as well as the colourful uniforms they wore.

    Swiss Army

Durable, versatile, and it glows in the dark!

I've given several Victorinox Classic SD knives as gifts. Other than my first Vic (the Huntsman) which I bought at a department store, I buy all my Vic Swiss army knives from this seller (Swiss Knife Shop). I bought THIS knife through Amazon because I didn't want any engraving on it and I was bundling my order with other things. Most often I buy my Victorinox knives directly from the seller because if you buy directly from their website (not here on Amazon) you can get engraving on the knife--and they always offer free shipping. Besides the Victorinox quality, the engraving is what makes them such great gits. For example, I've given these Classic SD knives to my soldiers (with last name engraved) when one would surpass all his platoon-mates in certain skills tests. I've never given one as a gift and seen disappointment on the recipient's face. I give these to friends and family too.I bought this Classic SD with Stayglow scales as part of a (Altoids-type) survival tin I'm... 5/5 totallyfrozen (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Everyone should have one... you will use it nearly every day.

I think that this item should be standard issue to everyone. I have several and if I don't have a reason to use it daily, someone around me does. Outside of the fact that US airports don't seem to practice a consistent standard for whether you are allowed to fly with these little things (I've lost 2 to airport security, but been given the ok on many more occasions, since the restriction level was supposedly lessened a while back - - I take them off my keyring now and leave them in my car when taking a short trip, but will pack in luggage - if I have luggage, which I usually don't for the trips I take). They are small, utilitarian and excellently made. They come out of the box sharp (the knife, not the tweezers, toothpick or fingernail file) and could give your finger a real cut, if you are not careful, so I appreciate the concern of airport security, and don't argue the point. So, don't be surprised or angry if you have one with you for multiple flights or visits to... 5/5 Jeffrey Johnson - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Incredibly handy, especially for fishermen.

These are incredibly handy pocket knives, especially for fishermen. Let me get straight to the point:Pros:- Sharp scissors and knife! I use the scissors to cut fishing line (I typically use up to 20 lb test braid and up to 40 lb test mono leader) and the blade to open packages. As usual, remember to close it when you're done with it.- Contrary to the picture shown, the nail filer end is actually flat. That's right, it doubles as a flathead! It has saved me many times when I needed a small flathead screwdriver and didn't have one laying around.- Lightweight! Since there's a keychain loop, I keep this on a neck lanyard and it doesn't bother me one bit.- The tweezers are tiny and useful for picking up small screws (I use them for reassembling my fishing reels).- The plastic pick is useful for various things, such as trying to get sand out of the crevices of something that you wouldn't take the knife to instead.- If properly maintained,... 5/5 noc - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?)
